Aerogel helped upgrade a home improvement and décor retail chain located throughout Europe, including France, Italy, Poland and Russia.
In anticipation of an update to current building codes, from RT2005 to RT2010, the Castorama Stores embarked on an ambitious 5-year plan to upgrade both interiors and exteriors of 90% of Castorama stores by 2009.
The first new store to be completed is environmentally friendly due to the use of photo-voltaic panels on the roof, «Canadian wells» using geothermal technology, thick insulation (200 millimeters) on the roof, and LUMIRA® aerogel for smoke extractors. Our French partner, Alcaud SA, installed the project, using their Euromaxidome 16 millimeter polycarbonate smoke extractors insulated with LUMIRA aerogel. Each smoke extractor measures 3 by 2 meters, for a total translucent surface of 300 meters²50 on the 14,000 meter² total surface of the store. Kingfisher is known for its dedication to sustainable business practices and social responsibility, making the inclusion of Euromaxidome with LUMIRA aerogel an easy decision.

Castorama (French pronunciation: [kastoʁama]) is a French retailer of DIY and home improvement tools and supplies, headquartered in Templemars, France, and is part of the British group Kingfisher plc, which has 101 stores in France and 90 in Poland.[1] The company became a subsidiary of Kingfisher plc in May 2002, along with Castorama’s own subsidiary Brico Dépôt.[2]
Some outlets have been converted or relocated under the Brico Dépôt format «DIY warehouse», based on the B&Q Warehouse fascia in the United Kingdom. In February 2009, Kingfisher sold 31 stores of Castorama in Italy to French retailer Leroy Merlin.
In 1969, Christian Dubois founded in Englos, near Lille, France’s first large-scale (5000 m2) DIY store. The rapid expansion of the chain meant that 20 years later Castorama had 80 stores in France.
